Scouts ready for worst winter can throw at them

"Be Prepared" – that’s the motto of Scouts worldwide.

Now – thanks to Sembcorp Energy UK - a resourceful group of Teesside youngsters have shown they’ve got the energy and determination to face the worst that the North East winter can throw at them.

The 6th Redcar Scout Group has taken ownership of four electric wall-mounted radiators donated by integrated energy company Sembcorp.

The move that will ensure their Laburnum Road prefabricated hut - just yards from the chilly North Sea and used three times a week by around 50 male and female Scouts, Beavers and Cubs - stays warm enough for their activities to continue over the long winter months.

The recycled radiators had been destined to be scrapped following the closure of a gym on the Wilton International site until the request from the thrifty Scouts came in.

Andrea Bilton, a volunteer parent for the group, said: "We’ve had so many expensive issues to deal with in regards to the hut it was wonderful that Sembcorp was able to step in to donate this equipment. It’s given us all a warm glow and will make a tremendous difference to what we can do in the months when we can’t be outdoors."

Keith Kidd of Sembcorp’s Buildings Roads and Land Management Group was the spark to get things going.

He said: "Like the Scouts we strive to do our best. When we can’t reuse, we look to recycle and the Redcar group’s request arrived just in time to save these units from the scrap bin."
